SC stops Mamta from giving Singur lands to farmers

The Supreme Court directed the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to return Singur land to ‘unwilling’ farmers, in what can be seen as some relief for Tata Motors which had leased the land from the previous Marxist government for its doomed Nano factory.

The Supreme Court has asked the West Bengal government to refrain from returning land at Singur – originally leased to the Tatas – to farmers, for now. The Tatas appealed to the Supreme Court after a series of setbacks in the Calcutta High Court. The legal battle between the Tatas and Mamata Banerjee is rooted in a recent Act passed by her government – that act allows Ms Banerjee to reclaim 600 acres leased to the Tatas for their Nano factory. She had promised in her campaign for the Bengal elections that this land would be returned to “unwilling farmers.” These farmers say they were coerced by the Left government that was in power before Ms Banerjee into giving up their land for Tata Motors. They had refused to accept compensation. The Tatas have challenged the Singur Act in the Calcutta High Court.
