Brickheads – Osteobots Practice Skit.mpg

For the 2010 Body Forward First Lego League season, we have chosen a project that is for patients with osteopenia (low bone mass) and a way to prevent osteoporosis. We have combined the current technologies of stem cell research, synthetic materials to mineralize the new bone quickly, and nanotechnology. Although nanobots seem like a way off in the future idea, the truth is they should be being used for medical procedures by 2020. In order to build nanobots, you would have to do what most people feel is impossible, but IBM has already achieved it! IBM has recently achieved the ability to build things 1 molecule at a time. This breakthrough is called molecular manufacturing. Up until now all we’ve known of is atomic level manufacturing, but all of that is about to change drastically. The stem cells that would be delivered by the nanobots or stimulated to reproduce themselves quicker in younger patients are called osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are new bone cells that start out soft, but mineralize over time with the help of minerals like calcium and phosphorus. Researchers have discovered that electro spun and elctrosprayed nanfibrous materials mineralize osteoblasts at a much higher rate than regular minerals. Nanobots will be able to be built with numerous different substances like synthetic hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite is a new synthetic ceramic that actually promotes the growth of osteoblasts in test trials. The nanobots will deliver the stem cells, the electro spun

What does the term “nanotechnology” mean? Why is the prefix, nano, used in connection with technology? How is this connected with the picometer.?

Best answer:

Answer by ginabgood1
NANOTECHNOLOGY – The purposeful manipulation of matter at the atomic level to achieve a defined goal.

Picometer – A metric unit of length equal to one trillionth of a meter

Therefore, the term “picometer” is a way to measure extremely small distances, which could be applied to nanotechnology as a measuring device.
